Microgrid Institute joins NYU law School Symposium
March 3, 2014: Today Microgrid Institute Director Michael Burr joined the NYU Law School Symposium on the Utility of the Future. As part of a panel moderated by Adjunct Professor and Latham & Watkins Partner Michael Gergen, Burr presented an address on innovative business models in the utility industry, and how microgrids fit into the industry's future.
“The traditional utility business model faces disruptive challenges, especially from distributed energy resources technologies,” said Michael Burr, director of Microgrid Institute. “Utilities will play a key role in optimizing the value of microgrids and other DERs, but regulatory frameworks need adjustment to properly align incentives and encourage an integrated strategic approach to planning and deployment.”
Panel members included:
New York Public Service Commission Chair Audrey Zibelman presented the keynote address, discussing the PSC's plans for "animating real markets" in the retail energy industry.
Burr said, "New York is demonstrating important leadership in addressing challenging questions facing energy industry stakeholders, including regulated utilities. Microgrid Institute looks forward to continuing collaborative efforts to ensure New York's market evolution facilitates optimal planning and deployment of distributed energy technologies to meet customers' critical requirements."
